Age UK Barnet offers practical support scheme to keep warm this winter

Age UK Barnet has just launched its Winter Home Checks and Grants project, which will run from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. The scheme will support eligible older residents in Barnet with a one-off grant of £200 per household and an additional £100 for each eligible individual in the same household.

The money is to go towards energy costs, alongside a free home visit from the charity's Handyperson service to install simple draught-proofing measures, with the aim to help older residents stay warm, safe and comfortable during the colder months, while reducing heat loss and improving energy efficiency in the home.

Who can apply?

The scheme is open to Barnet residents who:

  • Were born on or before 27 June 1960
  • Receive a means-tested benefit, such as Pension Credit or Housing Benefit
  • Have household savings of less than £6,000

"For many older people, winter can be a worrying time. Even small increases in energy costs can have a significant impact on those living on a fixed income, and we know some residents will face difficult choices between heating their homes and meeting other essential expenses.

This project offers both immediate financial support and practical help to make homes warmer and more energy efficient. We want older people in Barnet to know that support is available, and we encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to get in touch." - Jenny Jean-Charles, Advice Services Manager (Age UK Barnet)

The free Handyperson visit can also reduce heat loss through simple measures such as draught-proofing doors and windows, helping residents stay warmer throughout the winter. For residents who do not meet the financial criteria for the grant, there is the opportunity to access the Handyperson service but on a self-funded basis at the charity's standard rate.

To apply for this grant, residents can apply to the Winter Home Checks and Grants project by contacting Age UK Barnet:
